(March 26) UT Dallas wins 2008 Southwest Collegiate Championship – UT Dallas took first place in the team championship with 16.5 points. UT Dallas finished ahead of other colleges, such as Texas Tech (2nd place) at 9.5 and UT Austin (3rd place) at 7.0. Others, such as SMU, played at the Hilton Americas in Houston, TX March 8-9. First individual place with 4.5 points went to Marko Zivanic (UTD). Tied for 2nd-4th with 4.0 points were UTD team members Davorin Kuljasevic, Chaitanya Vaidya, and Bayaraa Zorigt. In 5th place with 3.0 points was Francisco Guadalupe.
(March 24) Townview Center Wins Team Trophy At DISD Chess Championship (Oak Cliff Tribune, 2-28-08) - Undergraduate Studies Dean Michael J. Coleman awarded a chess tournament winner with a four-year scholarship.

(February 21) Skyline student Eduardo Ramos won first place at the fifth annual Dallas ISD High School Chess Championship. He won a four-year academic excellence distinction scholarship to the University of Texas at Dallas, which covers tuition and mandatory fees as well as a $1,000-per-year contribution toward living expenses. (December 9) UT Dallas Chess Team wins national scholastic team and individual titles in Houston. Team led by Chaitanya Vaidya, FM Igor Shneider, and WFM Bayaraa Zorigt won first place by a wide margin. Vaidya, the only UT Dallas player with no master title, surprised all with a first place finish for the individual title. There were almost 1400 scholastic entries in all sections of the event.

(March 26) UTDallas Wins 2007 Final Four of Chess In an awesome display of power and mastery, chess players from UT Dallas thoroughly dominated their opponents to win the 2007 Final Four of Chess tournament, held this weekend in Fort Worth, Texas.
(March 21) UT Dallas wins Southwest Collegiate Championship - UT Dallas defeated intrastate archrival UT Brownsville and 12 other colleges including UT Austin, SMU, and Texas Tech at the Adam’s Mark Hotel in Dallas, TX March 17-18. This was the largest and strongest tournament in the history of the event. UTD took first place in the team championship with 16.5 points; UTB was second with 13.5 points. Tied with 4.5 points each for first place individual were IM John Bartholomew (UTD) and IM Daniel Fernandez (UTB). Tied for 3rd-5th with 4.0 points were UTD team members Jacek Stopa, Ali Morshedi, and Yashodhan Gogte.

(March 24) New textbook for UTD Online Chess Courses: “Children and Chess: A Guide for Educators by Dr. Root” A Guide for Educators is the first book to show the connection between accepted educational theories and chess. It features lesson plans teachers can use immediately. From these units and lesson plans, teachers learn the basics of chess, and, since the plans meet academic goals through chess, they also learn that chess can be a part of reading, math, science, and social studies. An appendix showing how chess meets the requirements of curriculum standards is another plus.

(February 22, 2006) Tim Redman to Present Lecture - Tim Redman, Ph.D., UTD Professor and Director of the Chess Program, will present a lecture entitled The Uses of Photographs in Modernist Biography: The Case of Ezra Pound, as part of the Spring 2006 Faculty Lecture Series here at UTD. The lecture will take place on Thursday, March 2 at 2 p.m. in JO 4.614. Dr. Redman will talk about how and why a writer collects and selects photos to accompany a biography. He will look at a few dozen photos from the extensive collection gathered for consideration for use in his life of the American poet, Ezra Pound. Versions of this talk were given at the 2001 International Pound Conference at the Sorbonne (IVeme) and at the 2005 Conference on Modern Biography at Yale, and it is scheduled to be presented at Oxford next year.

(March 10, 2005) ChessFest IV to Feature Leading Educator Sunil Weeramantry - ChessFest, an annual tribute to the world-class chess program at UTD, this year will feature a lecture by educator and former New York chess champion Sunil Weeramantry.

(March 3, 2005) New Grandmaster to join Chess Team - Selected as a McDermott Scholar for the 2005 entering class is Costa Rican Alejandro Ramirez, who was home-schooled, and at 16 is the third-youngest chess grandmaster in the world and the only grandmaster from Central America. He has traveled extensively, reads widely in English and Spanish and is a well-known public speaker in his native Costa Rica. Alejandro plans to major in physics or electrical engineering.

USATE (Feb. 19-21), New Jersey State Chess Federation Breaks Record with 2005 U.S. Amateur Team East. (New Windsor) 1,210 chess enthusiasts made up 286 teams to break a record for the 2005 U.S. Amateur Team Chess Championship held at the Parsippony Hilton February 19-21, 2005 in Parsippany, New Jersey. In addition to chess being the ultimate entertainment at this event, one of the highlights is the costume competition. Even if you are not one to experience the thrill of the chess competition...being a spectator could just be one of the most exciting times you've ever had at a chess championship! 2nd place overall: UTD Orange Team.
